Sorry I have no photo, but while on scaffolding, stripping paintwork outdoors today (very mild for 22 Oct, but this is South Kent coast) I was visited twice by a very large, hornet like creature, with a low buzz, slow and deliberate flight, but extraordinarily hairy and russet coloured - it did not have black eyes, they were also brown. I got a close look at it, as it seemed to be coming close to look at me! Any ideas?
Thanks so much, but still not right - these suggestions made me have a harder look on line, and the nearest thing I can find is Xylocopa varipuncta, not a UK insect, BUT I was up the scaffolding again today, and it briefly flew around again, as if it might be trying to hibernate in the roof, and the reroofing has disturbed it? Not able to use a camera up there.
