Need help identifying LARGE hornets two to two & 1/2 inches long. Large black head with large elongated golden brown abdomen with prominent evenly spaced black bands. Prominent stinger though non-aggressive to humans nearby. Found solely in this case on the wider wooden stalks of lilac bushes, seem to be more prevalent on sunny days, during the heat of the day, late spring to autumnal first frost. Located in Northwest Missouri along Missouri River. Were seen emerging from a 3/4" hole in grassy lawn, previously inhabited by local bumblebees.
Thanks for that info. However after reviewing great golden digger wasps the image does not match, as it does not show a black banded abdomen, nor does its size egual the XL observed. However, I have seen the XL in question capture cicadas in flight like a peregrine falcon.
