Hi can someone identify this spider for me I found it in my garage cupboard and am intrigued as to what species it might be and whether I need to be concerned at all. Thankyou.
Looks like a false widow, though not sure of species. They can give a nasty bite apparently, only in self defence though and not really dangerous. A true black widow would have a red hourglass marking. I found one last winter, and it was identified as Steatoda grossa; this one looks very similar. Look up Steatoda for pictures of the different species.
The true Black Widow isn't normally found in the UK
For such a dark Steatoda, and with these white chevron marks on its abdomen, I guess we could think of a S. paykulliana as well. They can be really black with contrasting marks (white, orange, red).
Due to the separated spots at the side of the abdomen, I'd say this could also be S. triangulosa, although I'm not sure how dark they can get.
At first glance, it actually reminded me of the mediterranean black widow- Latrodectus tredecimguttatus (see below pics) but I think the spots down the centre of the abdomen are too pointed. Surely it won't be long before these are over here though, you can find them in France so they haven't got far to travel!
