Hi, can anyone help me please. I was digging out some weeds today when I unearthed this. I believe it is (or should I say will become) a Convolvulus Hawk Moth. Is this correct? The only information I can find says that these moths are migrants and rarely breed in the the UK. If I put it back into the ground how deep should it go? Is it likely to survive the winter or will it hatch before then? At the moment it is just under the surface of a flower pot full of soil in a cool shed to keep it out of harms way. Many thanks.
Looks spot on to me. I saw an adult a month or so ago at Aylesford in Kent. I have always favoured keeping pupa outdoors but safe in finely netted pots. The only downside of which is the daily checking (but can be fun when you have 40 Lime Hawks hatching out over a week or so). Watch out for mice as well!
