caterpillar id please

Would love to know what this handsome fellow enjoying our dahlias might be. He's about an inch and a half long. I thought the somewhat "angular" rear end reminded me of some hawk-moth caterpillars, but he lacks the horn that they often have, and didn't seem to match anything in my moth book.... any help will be much appreciated.

I think it maybe  The Dot moth ( melanchra persicariae ),it seems to vary in colour ,the pattern and shape look close.

I was presuming that this caterpillar was taken in the UK.If you are from America this is likely to be a Hitched Arches moth ( melanchra adjuncta ).This caterpillar varies from green to brown ,like your example.
