What is this beetle?

beetle.jpgMy sister has found a cluster of about 11 of these beetles on her living room window sill.

What is it? Does she need to worry?

This is Metoecius paradoxus, the wasp nest beetle.  Interesting because they aren't common, and we had one a few days ago.  This must be the time they emerge.  They live in wasps nests, normally subterranean but there are reports of them living in wasps nests in houses.  I think this is where yours came from and probably suggests that there is a wasp nest nearby.  Have you looked in your loft lately?
