Small tree ID help please

This tree has been growing in my boyfriend's parent's backyard for years, more than half of it is dying due to being hit by falling limbs from another larger tree.  It has star shaped berries and they say it flowers but I can't recall seeing them and it's nothing like a flowering dogwood or a redbud when it does bloom.

Here is a good shot of the star shaped berries:

He's trying to save the part that's living by encouraging new root growth (the rest of the tree past that point seems completely lifeless)

Any ideas would be appreciated!

As no one has answered your post I thought I'd leave a comment in the hope it will bump your question up to the top and an expert will spot it this time around.

I searched the internet for your tree and the nearest I could find visually was sacha inchi which yours obviously isn't.

I wait with interest in the hope someone can ID it.
