Hi, I noticed what looked like a mosquito in my room tonight, and as I can't stand the things I squished it with some tissue. However, when I brought it down off the ceiling and looked at the tissue, the mosquito was green with greeny-yellow blood. Just wondered what species this is, should I be worried? Is it even a mosquito? I live in Bristol, UK. I often get lots of mosquitoes in my room as I live near water.
This is a chironomid midge - aka Non Biting Midge, and probably a species of Chironomus itself.
The larvae are detritus feeders at the bottom of rivers, ponds, ditches etc. and adults do not bite. They are attracted to light after dark and can soon fill a bedroom if you leave windows open and lights on.
