I found this small bone on the beach at Mingulay. It might have washed ashore, or washed out of the old settlement on the island. Does anyone know what it might be? It's a very similar size to a dog biscuit but I'm sure it's made of bone! There's also a tiny hole in one side of it.
My best guess is Porpoise (Phocoena) humerus.
I hope it's not a human phalanx, although its size matches:
I don't think this is human but it's difficult to tell from these photographs and also because the joint surfaces have been eroded by the sea. Would it be possible for you to take one more photograph of it on its side? I should be able to confirm from that.
I should also mention that if anyone finds anything on a beach that they have any reason to believe is human then it should be reported to the police.
