Spiky oak tree

I've spent ages trawling the net, trying to ID this. Seen in central Turkey. Doesn't seem to fit with the usual Holly Oak pics, and the acorns had this odd texture instead of being shiny. The tree (bush?) was about one and a half meters tall.

    Hi,

the closest Quercus species I can find with leaves like those in your pic, and which grows in that region, is Q. coccifera, Kermes oak and Q. aucheri. Of those the acorns look most like those of Q. aucheri.

The leaves of Q. aucheri are highly variable, the edge of which seems to range from spiny to smooth so the acorn character has to be the main character used to distinguish between them.

    I hope that helps.

    Jen
