This is Volucella zonaria, the Hornet Mimic Hoverfly. They are large, impresive and intimidating hornet mimics, but just a harmless fly at the end of the day and without the means to inflict a sting or bite. Females lay their eggs in the nests of social wasps where larvae feed and develope on detritus within the nest. This was once a rare fly in the UK but has become more common and widespread over the last 60 years.
Beer and exotic looking flies, sounds like beer garden heaven to me - mines a pint of Lady Godiva!
