Grasshopper caught in house lounge.

Hello There.

My mother was sitting on the garden patio on Tuesday 14 June 2012 around 3.15pm,  she heard unusual bird tweets, I came out of the house and my mother asked me if I heard these sounds, I said I did not, thought nothing of it and returned to the house via the patio and French doors to the lounge.

On the green carpet, I saw what looked like hairs from our pet dog, I bent down to pick them up, and I heard a click and this thing jumped, I could not locate it, a few minutes later it was by a chair. I put my right hand over this creature, took it into the garden and showed my mother.

It was a grasshopper,  about   1" in  length,  a dark brown back, the body and left and right sides were bright green along with the head,  I placed it on our garden table, and it hopped away onto the flowerbeads.

In all the years of living at this house, this is the very first time, I have held and seen a grasshopper.

Are they rare in this part of Finchley north-west London.

    Hi Richard,

Your description sounds very much like a Meadow Grasshopper Chorthippus parallelus. (male)

(Though it could have been a cricket. Short antenna = Grashopper, long antenna = Cricket. )

June is about the earliest these mature and you will still come across them into November.

Their song is quite distinct, and I bet if you sit quietly on a warm afternoon you will hear them even in Finchley.

Better still, if you allow a parch of lawn to grow wild it wont be long before you have a whole colony serenading you.

Take a look at http://www.wildguideuk.com/orthoptera.htm and see if you can pick out your visitor.

    Chris.
