Spotted this odd little fella buzzing around with the bees in my garden today (well actually this one was just sitting quietly minding it's own business!). Unfortunately the picture is not very clear of the head and legs etc but the body is clearer, the gingery coloured stripes were furry and the white parts smooth. Sorry if it's an obvious one, but I haven't a got a clue!
Well, now you come to mention it I didn't really notice if it was moving or not as I was paying more attention to all the lovely bees really, so I went outside this morning and found that it's head and legs are still there in the same place but it's body is completely gone and is nowhere to be seen! eugh!! Would still like to know exactly what it was and what had happened to it though.
I'll be amazed if anyone can give a definite ID from that photo. Firstly, it's not great a photo and secondly, when a fly gets infected with fungus the abdomen gets distorted and looks abnormal. It does look a bit like a dung fly, Scatophaga - based on colour and general shape - but that's probably wide of the mark.
