Bug on my tree

IMG_0388.JPG

When I was tidying up after trimming a tree in the front garden I found this.  I've absolutely no idea what it is!

It was about four inches long, no real facial feature (it seemed to be leading with a wierd sucker on the left  It has a strange point/tail very similar to a slugs sensors.  The tree was a willow and had been significantly eaten away.

I'm not sure if it is part of the caterpillar or slug family.  Any help woiuld be great!!
