Hello, I've not been able to identify this beetle - can you help? There's a large population over my chard and spinach which has run to seed.
Its black and a similar shape to a lady bird. I thought it might be some kind of leaf or shield beetle.
On its upper body its got 2 orange/red spots either edge of its upper body.
Its then got 4 little white spots across the middle of its body, which go all around the rest of the edge of its lower body.
It then has 2 vertical lines of yellow spots running from the middle band of white spots to the bottom of its lower body.
It seems more keen on crawling than flying.
I want to know if its a bug that may harm new plants.... I'm intending to replant that container soon....well start off from seed....
Please post an image. (I've read your post ten times and now I see rows and bands of differently coloured spots dancing round in front of my eyes - being high on LSD must be something like this.)
Hello, Yes, that looks like the one!! Thanks, and there are 2 green shieldbugs on the plant I noticed later today too! So makes sense. I never would have found that!
Hmm, I've just read that they can do damage to runner bean crops, of which i have some, though haven't noticed any of the beetles on it yet... I do want to get rid of the old chard, so i can replant the pot, but then i guess they may move to my runner beans....
Hmm.. not too many records of this these days- where in the country are you???
