First time of posting and I'm not familiar with the protocol of this web so please bear with me. I was out taking photographs and noticed this bug on an old stone font outside a church in Ireleth, Cumbria. Fascinated that it was so big - maybe an inch or so in length. I love the photo that I've taken and wanted to be able to identify it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. And how do I make this post a question???
This is a fly that I put in Tabanidae (just to be on the safe side - like I consider all unknown mushrooms to be deadly poisonous). I would guess (because I know nothing about flies) that it belongs to Tabanus and, if so, it might be a Tabanus sudeticus.
