I live on the south east coast and have just discovered these striking insects on my rose bush. They are 9mm long. Can anyone identify them please?
Great photo! - they look like large rose sawflies to me, Arge pagana or somebody closely related. Not v popular with gardeners, but striking, as you say. http://www.arthurgrosset.com/suffolk/largerosesawfly.html has a clear photo and a little info.
Thanks KerrinB. I was given this container grown rose as an present and I bet the compost was contaminated. They have been disposed of. Thanks again.
This is why I hate 'gardeners'. Tell them what some wonderful animal is and their first question is 'how do I kill it?'
