Hi, Have been chasing this - what ever it is - around our garden in South West France for days trying to get a photo Today we scooped it out of the pool, fortunately in time for it to make a full recovery. It doesn't look much in this photo as it was still very wet, but when flying it looks absolutely stunning with the yellow markings being very vivid. I would like to know what it is, it seems to have the front wings of a dragon fly and the hind wings of a butterfly/moth. It seems to fly with its body at an angle of 20-30 degrees and has a wingsspan of around 30-35mm. Any ideas, I can find nothing on the internet.
I am afraid the photo attached has been distorted on uploading, It appears more elongated than it is in real life. I will gladly send photos to anyone who can help.
Thanks CKMerlin and everyone else. When you know what it is there is a lot of information on the internet. Not sure what the little critter is doing in our neck of the woods, supposed to be in South East of France and Spain. However we do have the right conditions for it as we are on a limestone plateau.
