Grub Identification Please

Today I was digging in the backyard building a garden wall when I found these:grub.jpggrub2.jpggrub3.jpg

They scare but fascinate me at the same time. What exactly are they and what do they eat? (my dad says they eat grass)

Thanks,

Cathryne

Now these foxed me for a bit as I could not quite make out what was going on with the legs - but cropping one image a bit makes it a bit clearer.

These are cicada larvae and they live beneath ground feeding on roots for many years. I'm guessing that you are in the USA (back yard) and there are many species there that have regular and synchronised mass emergences at intervals between 2 and 9 years depending on the species.
