Cross-species mating

Something I've never seen before - different butterfly species mating. The coupled Peacock and the Meadow Brown were disturbed from a hedgerow by my passing and flew up fairly high in a Sallow, as seen. The Peacock did all the flying, the Meadow Brown kept its wings closed. They remained settled and coupled as shown, and I had to move on after some minutes.

Is it possible to say which sex was which from the behaviour or photo?  Presumably there would be no outcome of this mating?
