Pine Marten?

We saw this creature in North Staffordshire recently and think it may have been a Pine Marten - very rare round here.  We have been told it was a stoat but I think it was too big for that - it was approx cat sized.  It was about 30 feet up the tree when this picture was taken. What do you think?017.JPG

    Hi

I agree the tail rounded contours  confirm it for me, a Stoats tail  ends in a black tip all year around Pine Martens are great climbers Well done getting a photograph

      Hello,

I say this is a Stoat, not a Pine Marten. Martens have longer faces, yellow not white bibs, fluffy tails from the root and not black-tipped like this Stoat. You can google and compare photos of the two species to see the differences.

Better exposure would have made the photos more relevant.

      Best wishes,

      Florin

I,ve never seen a "cat-sized" stoat!  Can you say how big the tree was at that height, it might give a better idea of scale.

I think you are correct about pine marten.  Stoats have white bellies not bibs and from the size of the tree ? about a foot wide I guess ,it is too big for a stoat.  The "black tip" could possibly be a shadow from the broken branch.

It looks like the feet are white on 018 - Copy.JPG, and this implies a stoat. The stoat also have a white lower jaw, which is difficult to judge from those two images (do you have a photo with the head seen from the side?).
