Looks like a big woodlouse?

I spotted this bug on the waterfront of the River Mersey last week around midnight.  It's body alone was nearly two inches long.  I'd love to know what it is!

You are very close. That is a Water Louse, which are a close relative of the woodlouse.

They belong to the genus Asellum and as you have found, live in and around damp places like streams.

    What ho.

This is the Sea Slater Ligia oceanica. They come as a pretty big suprise to those that have not seen them before. They swim pretty well too and are not adverse to taking a high dive into the sea when they feel threatened.

    Best wishes Lewis
