You're right, it's a female southern hawker. Those two thick pale stripes on the back of the thorax between the head and the wings are a really good character to identify this species.

I can't claim all the credit though I used Steve Brooks' 'Field Guide to the Dragonflies and Damselflies of Great Britain and Ireland' which is excellent if you are in the market for a book on dragonflies.
