Is it a bed bug?

I've found a few bugs very similar to the attached picture except the hard back seems to be split horizontally from the head like a beetle and doesn't have the 'stripes' across the body like most pictures of bed bugs.

I think we do have problem with bed bugs as some of us are getting bitten but the only bugs I've found are in the bedroom of someone not being bitten and the study.

The only evidence in the bedrooms of those being bitten is the small blood marks on the sheets.

Yes, bedbugs are what you have there. A pest control company should be able to rid you of these unpleasant guests - very difficult to do so be your own means.

I have to admit I have just typed in a 'remedy' that 'came off the top of my head' for bedbugs to LBC phone-in radio which happened to be commenting on the prevalence of the critters in Britain in recent years. I said "You really don't have to be too worried about bed-bugs. Shake salt and cayenne pepper around affected areas and leave. You'll not be discomforted in a bed sprinkled with a modicum of salt 'n pepper. Hoover up condiments every three days and re-apply. In seasons when house spiders are evident definitely don't zap them. They are your bed-bug and other house biting creepy-crawley helpers." I suspect the implicit cleanliness and regular "Hoovering" I suggest is what will deal with these biting irritants.
