hi can anyone help give me a positive i.d on what is inside this grey rock i tapped open on east coast near cowden ,east yorkshire personally i dnt think the gold coloured stuff is pyrite as it looks nothing like i have ever seen or already have in my collection and there is alot of iron pyrite up the east coast !!! and i have been told the white stuff could be calcite????? any help will be greatly apprieciated .
Wow! That's a really lovely piece - I think that it is likely to be calcite and pyrite but its one of the nicest pieces I have seen.
The growing conditions must have been just right as the calcite crystals are large a well-formed and the pyrite looks great.
For long term preservation try to keep it in a dry place as humidity will speed up the breakdown of the pyrite.
hi ryan , thank you for answering my question :-)
The deep golden and blue colours makes me suspect that there might be chalcopyrite and bornite (a.k.a. peacock ore) involved. Compare http://www.flickr.com/photos/24675061@N05/4276385899 and http://www.oocities.org/ijkuk/chalcopyrite4.jpg.
hi thank you for your i.d i have just looked at the link to the photos and i think i agree with you it looks very similar .
