Hi, this was on a tree in my garden today (I am not sure what the tree is but i am going to try and identify it later in the Urban Tree Survey www.nhm.ac.uk/trees ). It was very attached to this branch and i didnt hear it make a sound. Is it a grasshopper?
this is almost certinately a female as it has the long ovipositor(egg laying tool) on the back of it rather than the sort of claws that the male hason its back end. I'm not sure whether it is an oak bush cricket because the one in the photo doesn't have a red band down its back so this could be the species Cyrtaspis scutata, i can't be sure though.
