My daughter found this today in the gravel by the side of our drive. We live in Whitchurch, Shropshire, though obviously the gravel could have been quarried anywhere!
Is it a fossil or just a rock structure, and can anyone tell me what is actually is?
The central core that seems to run through the piece is off-white and smooth, the outside of it is made up of regular parallel ribs, with part of it covered in a smooth stone outer 'shell' about 1mm thick.
Thanks is advance for any help!
Thanks Al and Keith, I've now looked at a few pictures of sponge fossils on Google and they do seem to share the same characteristics.
How do I mark this is answered?
