Ant identification query

I wonder if this ant can be identified from these images. It was running around without obvious companions today on leaf surfaces

    Hmm, no takers on this one - from what I can see it is likely to be the Black Garden ant, Lasius niger. Trouble is you do need to see several characters at high magnification to id these. This is a species that tends aphids in return for protecting them from other predators. It's a quid pro quo relationship - the ants get honeydew, the aphids get bodyguards.
