Please help identify this bee(?) - long proboscis and huge sting!

I found this strange insect drowned in a vase of Gladioli and nobody so far has been able to tell me what it is! It's about 2 cm long, fat and hairy, with a long proboscis that widens at the end (like a trumpet) and a big sting (0.5 cm long and very thick).

The children have christened it "Heffalump" because it looks like a rather worrying cross between a bee and an elephant!

Many thanks,
