I wondered if anyone knows what bird this is please?
Seen today near Brighton, UK and quite near the coast. There were a pair of them - sitting on a fence in between a ploughed field and sheep field. The habitat was quite sparce with no ponds or woodland nearby. The birds were quite peachy in colour with a distintive white streak on the tail which showed when in flight.
Yes, a Wheatear (Oenanthe oenanthe). They will be coming through for a few weeks more, as they make their way south. I bet you will see more, now that you know what they are! The name is supposed to be a corruption of 'white arse', which is certainly apt.
