I live in Corfu and at about this time of year we are plagued with a flying black beetle that are between about ½ to 1 centimetre long. If you catch them on the ground, they seem to prefer to scurry away rather than fly! I have attached an image.
The only thing that appears different in the description is the size. They are described as being between 3.5 - 4.5 mm in size. They definitely reach about a centimetre here in Corfu. Maybe the sun has something to do with that!
From a domestic point of view the plagues that we have had here seem on the wain. They get everywhere!
