Please can someone help me! I have loads of black beetles running about the house and they have started to fly. They are about 2cm in length and black. They look like a species of Ground beetle but all the info I have read says they don't fly, but mine do! They are a bit clumsy with the flying as I keep hearing them crash landing on the wooden floor! My 3 year old daughter has started collecting them to keep as pets and lets them crawl about on her arms! is this ok? Are they harmless? We were just starting to get used to them when the big ones started flying and they seem to have multiplied. How can we get rid of them or deter them? There are lots of them on the garden wall at night and I guess they are just creeping in open windows/doors. I live in Jersey, Channel Islands. would be so happy if someone can help!
I see no one's had a chance to reply to your post yet. I'm afraid I don't know much about beetles, but until someone can identify your specimen, you might want to take a look at
http://www.amentsoc.org/insects/what-bug-is-this/non-members-id-service.html to see if you can find an answer there.
And, if you are interested in them in general, you might want to check out the Creepy Crawlies gallery at the museum.
Hopefully someone will be along to tell you what kind of beetle it is soon!
All I could proffer by the way of help is that similar sounding beetles were common when I lived in Mallorca some years ago. They appeared in swarms and seemed to be around for a few days or couple of weeks then they'd go. (I'm recalling events 34 yrs ago so details get hazy). They were harmless to us, just a bit unpleasant.
Hope someone can put your mind at rest soon.
