Bee identification

Small bee ( 1.4cm ) long, slightly rotund totally black body except for thin yellowy band at top of thorax. Main part of thorax black furry, lower section shiny , more like a fly.

Seen in a garden in Surrey living in a burrow in the lawn, entrance approx (2.5cm). Disturbed by the mower and came out plus about another 8 ( some completely black ) quite aggressively.  Have looked at several websites but cannot find anything matching, would be gratetful for some help with identification.
