I photographed this flying insect on the Norfolk coastal path - sorry for the poor quality but it was very windy and the insect was trying to hide in some long grass.
It was about 15mm long and had darkish fly-type wings. I wondered if it was some sort of sawfly? I've looked through endless photos on the internet but can't find anything with a flattish abdomen. I've found various flies and wasps with a red patch on the abdomen but they all look much rounder. Can anyone id this for me or point me in the right direction please?
