Swebach Desfontaines, François Louis fl. 1769

This exquisite collection of watercolour drawings on paper is the result of Francious Louis Swebach Desfontaines own project.  His aim was to produce a publication of ten colour plates each depicting sixteen mineral  specimens set into boxwork cabinets.

The collection of plates held in the Natural History Museum Library, were to be used in Swebach's completed publication.  The collection contains original drawings for 10 prints with alternative versions. These drawings are accompanied by one page of text.  This prospectus for the proposed publication is the only copy which survives today.  The final project never came to fruition as Swebach noted at the close of his introduction, "the revolution prevented the publication of this work".

The drawings show Swebach's excellent ability to draw minerals on paper with meticulous accuracy and attention to detail.  Some plates are original drawings whilst others are engravings, however it is difficult to determine one from the other as an elaborate border was painted round each of them.  All are hand coloured.  To enhance the colour of some of the drawings Swebach has used shavings from the actual minerals

Some of the drawings appear to be direct replicas of those used in the famous book by Jean Fabien Gautier D'Agoty: Histoire Naturelle Règne Minéral (1781).  This is of little surprise as Swebach worked in the Gautier D'Agoty studio in Paris.  He was employed to carry on the work of D'Agoty on Histoire Naturelle Règne Minéral after his death.  In 1776 Gautier d'Agoty embarked on publishing a volume of the mineral kingdom; Histoire Naturelle Règne Minéral.  This publication was one of the first to be illustrated with printed colours. It consisted of a collection of colour printed plates with an explanatory text written by Jean Baptiste Louis Romé de l'Isle (1736-1790), the eminent crystallographer. The book was available by subscription, and was to be published in eight or ten instalments or 'decades'. Prior to his death, Gautier d'Agoty had completed just three of these 'decades'. Swebach then completed another four decades for Mme Gautier d'Agoty. The last, the seventh, is so rare that only two copies are known.

Swebach was an acquaintance of Jean Baptiste Louis Romé de l'Isle, and had assisted him in a project to make terracotta crystal models.  It is thought Romé de l'Isle may have recommended Swebach to Mme Gautier d'Agoty.

What was unique about Swebachs publication compared to D'Agoty's was that Swebach hand coloured all his plates, rather than using colour printing.

Swebach was a self taught artist, sculptor, engraver, painter and mineralogist.  Little of his background is known.  He was born in Toul, France in the later half of the eighteenth century.  By 1780 he had moved to Paris, working as an engraver.

It is not known what happened to Swebach during the French Revolution.  It is a mystery whether or not Swebach became a victim of the revolutionary executions.  Nothing is known of him after 1792.

"He that enlarges his curiosity after the works of nature, demonstrably multiplies the inlets to happiness"

This is the opening phrase of the preface to the third, 1799, edition of The Naturalist's and traveller's companion; by John Coakley Lettsom. M.D; where he defines the ultimate purpose of his book. A concise manual that has been somehow forgotten, it was a great achievement at it's time.

The first edition was published in London in 1772 by George Pearch and it seems to have sold out quickly as a second edition, corrected and enlarged followed in 1774, this time published by E & C Dilly also in London.

This is probably the first ever concise, modern, systematic and scientific manual on the preservation of natural history specimens and collections; giving advice not only on different aspects of capturing, finding, preserving, transporting and analysing plants, insects, fossils, animals and minerals but also on antiquities, religious rites, food, meteorology and even "precise directions for taking off impressions of cast from medals and coins".

The manual is also an incredibly practical, beautifully presented, well informed and advanced book that could be considered the founding publication for modern natural history preservation science. His advice on preserving natural history collections from pest attack anticipates by 200 years the groundbreaking Integrated Pest Management programs introduced in the last 20 years in Museums and Historic Houses:

It is uncertain if the manual was used by the great explorers of the period but given how popular it was at the time, it would be expected that copies of the book were carried on the many voyages of exploration that took place after its publication. It seems certain that Charles Darwin owned and used a copy although the great man was never known for being a good caretaker of his natural history collections.

John Coakley Lettsom was born in 1744 in Tortola, Virgin Islands. A Quaker concerned with anti-slavery, he manumitted the slaves from his two inherited plantations there; angering his plantation onwers neighbours then gaining their respect by setting up the first medical practice in the islands (with some of his former slaves trained as medical assistants) as he had become a doctor in Leiden, south Holland, in 1769.

Lettsom worked and travelled tirelessly all his life; famous for his commitment to his patients and the medical profession, he founded the Medical Society of London in 1775, the oldest in Britain and possibly in the world. In doing so, he showed great bravery and intelligence; parallel to his display of lateral thinking demonstrated in The Naturalist's and traveller's companion; by joining together the four branches of the medical profession in one society where they could share knowledge and experience:
Amazingly, he still had time to cultivate a famous garden in his London home, arranged according to the Linnaean system of classification:

The Library at the Natural History Museum also holds the original drawings made by his friend James Sowerby of the plants in Lettsom's garden, as well as a copy of his 1799 famous work "The natural history of the tea-tree".

Chris Ledgard's BBC4 Radio program: "What's eating your collections?" aired last September began quoting paragraphs from the Travellers's companion:

The Golden Age of Quaker Botanists by Ann Nichols, Cumbria, 2006.

The symposium Anchoring Biodiversity Information:From Sherborn to the 21st century and beyond, held on 28th October 2011, and brought together a wide range of people interested in history of science, bioinformatics and taxonomy to celebrate the work of Sherborn and discuss the future of the field.

Paul Cooper (Assistant Librarian) put together a display for attendees of items from the Library & Archives collections, and this online version includes a podcast of him talking about some of thise items, accompanied by a selection of images.

The full symposium is now available online!  You can listen to the talks with slides, and see the posters with an oral summary from the author, through this link:

Anchoring Biodiversity Information:
From Sherborn to the 21st century and beyond

Charles Davies Sherborn provided the bibliographic foundation for current zoological nomenclature with his magnum opus Index Animalium. In the 43 years he spent working on this extraordinary resource, he anchored our understanding of animal diversity through the published scientific record. No work has equalled it since and it is still in current, and critical, use.

Until now, Sherborn’s contribution has been recognised and relied upon by professional taxonomists worldwide but he has escaped the celebration of his accomplishment that is his due. This changed on Friday, 28 October 2011, with a symposium in his honour in the 150th year of his birth organised by the  ICZN, in collaboration with the Society for the History of Natural History at the Natural History Museum (NHM), London. The full day meeting included an international panel of experts on bibliography and biodiversity bioinformatics who linked a view of the past with an active debate on the future of the related fields.

The symposium was structured with an introduction to Sherborn as a man, scientist and bibliographer, then provided historical context for taxonomic indexing from the 19th century to today. Current tools and innovations were presented. The final sessions tackled the future of biological nomenclature, including shifting publishing modes and changing sociology of science in taxonomy. There were fifteen talks from distinguished speakers from around the world, and ten posters, including an exhibition of ‘Sherborniana’, or artefacts from Sherborn’s tenure at the NHM. The event was very well attended, with an audience of over 120 people present throughout most of the day. As the composition of the audience changed somewhat throughout the day, the number of people celebrating Sherborn was impressive.

The symposium was dedicated to Professor Frank Bisby, whose untimely death a few days earlier had shocked and saddened the biodiversity informatics community. Frank had initiated and directed Species 2000 and the Catalogue of Life, ambitious global taxonomy projects that build on the foundation laid by Sherborn’s indexes. The global and temporal reach of this event is being extended through podcasts of all the talks, posters and discussion, including slides and poster downloads, and videos of all the talks available through this site:

The event was organised and sponsored by the ICZN (Int’l Commission on Zoological Nomenclature) and the Society for the History of Natural History, with significant sponsorship support from the Linnean Society, BHL-Europe (Biodiversity Heritage Library-Europe), Pensoft Publishers (ZooKeys), The NHM – Natural History Museum, and ViBRANT – Virtual Biodiversity.

The Library & Archives reading room is closed to external visitors from Friday 23rd December 2011 - Monday 2nd January 2012 (inclusive).

We open as usual on Tuesday 3rd January 2012.

We wish you all a Happy Christmas & New Year.

2011 has marked the 150th anniversary of the birth of Charles Davies Sherborn, scientific indexer extraordinaire.

Almost all Sherborn's working life was spent at the Natural History Museum where he was employed on what we would now describe as a contract basis.

2011 Nov Sherborn_C_D_013.jpg

Charles Davies Sherborn working in  the Library at The Natural History Museum

An early curiosity with natural history developed in to a special interest in geology for Sherborn and in 1888 he began to mount and prepare fossils at the Museum.  Sherborn soon realized how useful it would be to zoologists and palaeontologists to have available an index of all scientific names (genus and species) applied to animals, including the date and place of publication. Sherborn took as his starting point the naming system for animals (and plants) devised by Carl Linnaeus in the mid 18th century and codified in his book "Systema naturae".  Possibly without fully realizing it, Sherborn had embarked on a truly stupendous task.  During 42 years from 1890 Sherborn wrote about a million index cards on which he recorded the bibliographic details relating to each species name.  These were published in the 11 volumes of the "Index Animalium" beginning in 1902.

This monumental publication became the basis for all zoological nomenclature work having gathered together all the relevant data in one place, just as an online database does today.

In October the Museum marked Sherborn's contribution to the development of zoological nomenclature with a symposium "Anchoring biodiversity information : from Sherborn to the 21st century and beyond"
