It is your last chance to see the First Fleet artwork currently on display in our Images of Nature gallery. The gallery closes from Monday 25th February and reopens on Wednesday 27th February with a brand NEW theme.

Indian artwork will be the theme for the next year, and every three months the artwork on display will be changed. This enables visitors to see other examples from our sizeable collection and allows us to protect our collections from any potential environmental damage such as light or temperature.

There will be a blog in March all about the forthcoming theme and examples of the items to be displayed, but in the meantime here is an taster to wet your appetite!

Monsters in the Library

by Lisa Di Tommaso (Special Collections Librarian)

Ulisse Aldrovandi (1522-1605) was a true Renaissance man who studied law, philosophy, logic and mathematics at the universities of Bologna and Padua. He was one of the great innovators of the study of nature during this period.

Ulyssis Aldrvandi- Monstrorum Historia-002-050213 - edit.jpgAldrovandi image 2.jpg

Aldrovandi established one of the most acclaimed curiosity cabinets in European history, containing more than 18,000 specimens, according to his written description from 1595. He was a believer in observing the species of study and he was an advocate for accurate illustrations in natural history books. His aim was to accurately identify and describe as large an amount of animals, plants and minerals that was possible and with the advancement of travel, new plant species and animals were being discovered all the time.

He travelled as much as he could in order that he could observe species for himself. He had his own museum which was a centre of study and research for him and his students. His watercolour and tempera collection totalled 8,000. He would commission artists and hire painters, and he also received many drawings as gifts.

Aldrovandi image 3.jpg

Aldrovandi image 4.jpg

Aldrovandi wrote roughly 400 volumes on natural history. Getting the work published was tougher though, and only a handful of his books were printed during his lifetime. One of the few was Monstrorum Historia: cum paralipomenis historiae omnium animalium, 1642 ("A history of monsters with the addition of the history of all animals"), a compendium of reported human and animal abnormalities.

The book includes accounts not only of malformed natural births but also of entirely imaginary monsters. Despite his dedication to scientific accuracy, this sort of juxtaposition was common at the time, since there was not as yet a distinction between the literary and the scientific. If a given monster had been described by previous authors it was considered proper and erudite to mention it, whether or not it was actually real.

Upon his death Aldrovandi’s museum was bequeathed to the city of Bologna and became the city’s first public museum.

Today sees the launch of a new resource that will hopefully offer users an invaluable insight into life and work of an eminent Victorian scientist; a scientist we hold dear to our hearts here at the Museum! Wallace Letters Online is an online archive of the correspondence to and from Alfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913), co-discoverer of the theory of evolution via natural selection and the father of bio-geography.

Wallace Letters Online brings together for the first time ever, all known surviving letters to and from Wallace, both academic and personal. This correspondence is housed in more than 100 institutions across the globe and this resource will offer an unparalleled insight into the mind of this great man; his thoughts, ideas and opinions laid bare for all to study. Highlights include the complete, surviving narrative between Wallace and Charles Darwin, letters sent and received during his Amazon and Malay Archipelago expeditions and correspondence Wallace exchanged with some of the greatest scientific minds of the nineteenth century.

Working as the Archivist for the Wallace Correspondence Project and having the privilege of reading Wallace’s letters has afforded me the opportunity to see first-hand, the great qualities he had; from his formidable intellect to his sharp and enquiring mind and a very quick wit, it’s all there in the letters, waiting to be uncovered. For me, personally, Wallace Letters Online offers another dimension, that of the exploration of Victorian communication networks.

Embedded amongst the historically and scientifically ground-breaking letters are those that pertain to the nuances of everyday life. The letters that Wallace writes confirming train times to friends who are to visit him or the enquiring letters, asking if a friend can lend him a bed for the night in London so he may attend an evening function. Put simply, these are communications that today we would send via text, tweet or Facebook message. These are also the communications that should a similar correspondence project be attempted 200 years from now would be lost and whilst one could argue that these types of letters offer no significant value, their absence would strip away a whole layer of knowledge about the social interactions of that era.

Whilst we celebrate Wallace as a great man of science and one of the greatest natural history collectors of all time, his correspondence also reveal the many, many different subjects and causes he wrote on and campaigned for. He became a Spiritualist in the late 1860s and published over a hundred writings on the subject. He became a vocal campaigner and supporter of Land Nationalisation, becoming the first President of the Land Nationalisation Society in 1881 and he was fervent in his opposition of compulsory vaccination in the closing years of the nineteenth century. All of these topics and more are featured in the letters in Wallace Letters Online. It also affords us a privileged glimpse into his family life, with letters digitised from Wallace to his two children, William and Violet. These letters reveal the affection towards but also the high standards Wallace held his children to.

Fortunately for us, Wallace had beautiful handwriting (as seen above) which makes reading his letters all the more enjoyable. Whether for research, curiosity or pleasure, you can now step back in time and read first hand his thoughts, opinions and arguments; you might be surprised at what you find. The catalogue will continue to be added to over the coming months with more letters from repositories around the world. We are also always extremely happy to hear from anyone who may own a Wallace letter or knows of some letters held in a private collection; please contact me with any details.

2013 also sees the Museum celebrating the life and legacy of Wallace, who died 100 years ago this coming November. To see what the up and coming Wallace events are at the Museum this year, head over to the Wallace100 pages of the website to find out more. We're also tweeting about Wallace over at the Library and Archives Twitter feed; follow us for a weekly dose of all things Wallace!

My colleagues and I in the Library & Archives are very lucky to work with such fascinating and varied collections. But sometimes it is easy to take for granted the shelves upon shelves of books that we walk past in corridors on a daily basis.

Recently we had a small display in our reading room, of some of the gems we have where the cover alone catches the imagination before you've even opened it up.

On a shelf with hundreds of others, with only a spine to catch the eye.

The amount of detail and thought put into some is incredible. Of course they come from a period where photography was either non-existent or only in its infancy and where the skill of the artist was the only way to make your book stand out from the rest.

The subject of natural history lends itself so well to the creativity of a publisher/author, and it is fascinating how they weave the theme of the book into the design of it's cover.

Michael Rogers Oldfield Thomas (1858-1929), the 'founding father of modern systematic mammalogy', was one of the most important mammal collectors of the later 19th and 20th centuries, and made a significant contribution to the development of the mammal collections here at the Natural History Museum.

Oldfield Thomas, as he was always known, was born in Millbrook, Bedfordshire and educated at Haileybury College in Hertford. Oldfield was his mother’s maiden name, his father was Vicar of Hillingdon, Middlesex.

Oldfield Thomas spent some of his childhood in South Africa when his father was appointed to the Archdeaconate of Cape Town. It was here that Oldfield Thomas developed his love of natural history collecting insects on Table Mountain.

Painting, oil on canvas, by J. Ernest Braun, 1904

     NHM image ref: 100047

On his return to England in 1876, he found employment as a clerk in the Museum Secretary’s office at the British Museum in Bloomsbury, London. Two years later he transferred to the Zoological Department, serving a short time as Dr. Albert Gunther’s clerk. Later he was appointed Assistant in Charge of Mammals where he served until his retirement in 1923.

In 1891, Oldfield Thomas married an heiress, the daughter of Sir Andrew Clark, Bart.; an eminent physician. With his increasing scientific reputation and wealth, Oldfield Thomas was able to considerably expand the Museum mammal collection.

Together he and his wife supported mammal collectors across the world, and financed expeditions where collecting was the main objective. Oldfield Thomas subsequently described many of the resulting specimens, amounting to over 2,500 new names for genera, species and subspecies during his lifetime. He became one of the foremost mammal experts of his time, writing over 1000 books, catalogues and papers.

He was an avid letter writer, corresponding with important scientists from all over the world. In 1901 he was made a Fellow of the Royal Society.

odlfield thomas.JPG

He died in 1929, leaving in his will numerous bequests to relatives, Museum staff and specialist societies and to the Museum itself he left this portrait and a bequest to finance expeditions to collect yet more mammals.

Every day throughout his life at the Museum, Oldfield Thomas would use the stairs to go back and forth from the then mammals room on the 3rd floor, to the main hall. Shortly before he died, he funded the installation of a small lift just inside the entrance of the museum. One of the last actions of a man who was thinking of the comfort and convenience of his colleagues. Today's NHM staff continue to spare their legs thanks to him!

The commemorative plaque inside the lift reads: 'The installation of this lift was rendered possible in 1929 by the generous gift from Oldfield Thomas, F.R.S. who was in the service of the Trustees 1876 to 1923'
