About fossils and rocks

Shepherd's crown echinoid, Micraster coranguinum (Leske)

Fossils tell us about the animals and plants that lived in the past and the world they lived in. Rocks and minerals tell us about the Earth through time, providing evidence of ancient seas, glaciers and volcanoes, for example. An amazing variety of rocks, fossils and minerals can be found in the British Isles.

If you find a rock, fossil or mineral, post your questions and photos here for help from experts from the Museum and the NaturePlus community. Please tell us where in the country you found it and include in focus photographs with a scale such as a ruler.
