They support a rich and diverse cross-section of life but, due to the effects of climate change, the islands have been identified as under threat. We linked live to Scilly to meet our scientists on their field trip to study the molluscs (snails, slugs, squids and clams) that inhabit the islands. With Jon Ablett, Andreia Salvador and Miranda Lowe

Adam-Richardson2013-06-05T15:39:12Z5 years, 2 months ago0Nature Live: Lichen? While living there in 1858, Wallace sent his essay on evolution by natural selection to Darwin in England. Wallace rented the house for 3 years and used it as his base, returning there after searching for rare specimens on distant islands. Many others have looked for it, so will George finally find it?

JonathanTy2013-05-22T15:35:46Z5 years, 2 months ago0Wallace's standardwing bird of paradiseJonathanTy2013-05-22T11:40:14Z2013-05-22T11:36:42Z

George Beccaloni reacts to the spectacular courtship display of Wallace's standardwing bird of paradise (Semioptera wallacei) in the rainforest of Halmahera Island, Indonesia. Males congregate at dawn and compete with each other to attract the drab females. Discovered by Wallace in 1858, he regarded it as one of his greatest zoological finds. 'Standardwing' refers to the four plumes that resemble flags or standards.

JonathanTy2013-05-22T11:36:42Z5 years, 2 months ago0
