When excavating any site today, scientists make detailed records about the place they are working at. They take photographs of the fossils before they remove them from the earth, which will later be used to assess what brought the bones to their final resting place in the ground. The lack of records and notes taken by the men at Piltdown would certainly raise suspicion among scientists today.
