John Murray
1841 - 1914
|
The Challenger carried seven scientists under the direction of the chief naturalist, Charles Wyville-Thomson. But it was John Murray whose name is most remembered. He supervised the production of the 'Report of the scientific results of the voyage of HMS Challenger', spending 19 years liaising with scientists all over the world to complete its 29,552 pages. He died in 1914 as a result of one of the first ever car crashes in the UK.
