Tea began as a medicine and is now one of the most popular and widely consumed drinks in the world. Tea drinking is not only an indispensable part of daily life but, as a consequence, influenced many cultural aspects and social customs. Its history through the ages is riddled with trade wars, industrial espionage and legalised drug running. Museum botanist Vilma Bharatan looks at the culture and history of tea, as well as the great diversity of different teas.
