Despite their enormous biological and economic value, coral reefs in the western Indian Ocean are seriously threatened by over exploitation, pollution, sedimentation and rising sea temperatures linked to global warming. Only a small percentage of the region’s reefs have ever been studied so research and management of these unique habitats is vital to ensure local communities a sustainable future.
