Desert Island Specimens is a regular platform where visitors can quiz scientists about the three specimens that inspire their fascination and contemplation, anything from meteorites to giant whale skeletons.

Until 1938 whale carcasses were buried in the Museum grounds so that their flesh would decay leaving only the skeletons.
