PEANUT

Arachis hypogaea L. (Fabaceae).

First given its scientific name by Carolus Linnaeus in 1753, from plants cultivated in Europe.

Originated in South America, probably Brazil and Peru.

Life form: perennial herb, cultivated as an annual.

Parts used: seeds used as a foodstuff for both humans and animals; husks of pods as forage.

Ploidy level: allotetraploid.
