ONIONS
Allium cepa L. (Alliaceae, segregate
family from Liliaceae).
Given its scientific name by Carolus Linnaeus in 1753, who recognised many forms of the plant.
Unknown in the wild, the onion probably originated in western Asia.
Life form: bulbous
perennial herb.
Parts used: bulbous stems and leaves eaten and used as seasoning; also used as a medicinal.
Ploidy level:
diploid.
