OATS

Avena sativa L. (Poaceae).

Given its scientific name by Carolus Linnaeus in 1753, based on plants grown in European gardens and fields.

Known only as a cultivated plant, it is derived from a wild species native to Europe and south-west Asia.

Life form: annual grass.

Parts used: seed used as grain.

Ploidy level: hexaploid.
