Cucumis melo L. (Cucurbitaceae).
Given its scientific name by Carolus Linnaeus in 1753, the melon was known only from cultivation in Europe at the time.
Native to the Old World tropics; also south-west and central Asia.
Life form:
perennial vine.
Parts used: edible fruits; both sweet and vegetable forms occur.
