BASIL - a herb

Ocimum basilicum L. (Lamiaceae).

This important herb was given its scientific name by Carolus Linnaeus in 1753.

Native to western Asia; basil is now cultivated worldwide.

Life form: annual or semi- perennial herb; sometimes somewhat shrubby.

Part used: Leaves used as seasoning.

Ploidy level: diploid.
