GRAPE

Vitis vinifera L. (Vitaceae).

Given its scientific name by Carolus Linnaeus in 1753, from plants cultivated and much appreciated throughout Europe. The grape is one of the few plants Linnaeus said was found all over the world.

Probably native to Europe, but cultivated for so long its origins are obscure.

Life form: perennial, woody vine.

Parts used: fruits used for food; juice fermented to make the alcoholic beverage, wine.

ploidy: diploid.
