Piltdown man

Detail from the painting 'Piltdown Gang' by John Cooke.

The Piltdown hoax had a massive impact in the science world. Despite many suspicious circumstances, the discovery of human bones and fossils at Piltdown was not revealed to be a hoax until 1953, 40 years later.

Conclusions

You have examined all the evidence and seen how modern science would explore such a discovery.

Scientists today would subject any new find that is hailed as the missing-link, to far more thorough analyses. Anything that didn't quite fit the picture would have to be explained. Today's evidence and greater knowledge about early humans combined with modern analysis techniques would almost certainly reveal the fraudulent nature of the Piltdown discovery very quickly.

Were scientists really deceived by the fossils? Or did the thrill of the discovery cloud their judgements? Having compared the science of 1912 with modern science, do you think the same situation could happen again?
